A little "Thank You" gift for my mailman

First, I'd like to wish all my American friends and readers a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Now here's a silly (but cute?) little story that happened today:
My parcel mailman is great (we have a "letter mailman", and a "parcel mailman" here). Last month he brought me so many parcels containing Katrina bags; there are also all the books I need to order online, because they are neither in libraries nor in bookshops (I so miss the American or English university libraries!! Sigh...) ... Being a mailman in Paris is not so easy (there are interphones and so many stairs to climb...) But my mailman is always kind and in a great mood! So I wanted to thank him in a special way.

I talked about it on my French sewing group, and one of my sewing buddies gave me the recipe for a banana-orange jam (yeah I know, it's not sewing, but...). I tried it and the first batch was a real success! So much so that when he was finished with his first jar, Sébastien opened the mailman's jar inadvertently! Therefore I made a second batch this weekend. It really isn't long and complicated anyway.

To make the jar special (and so Seb didn't make any more mistake! ), I embroidered a jar topper.

The words say: "Cuvée du facteur - Merci !" meaning "Mailman's Batch - thank you"!

Now let me tell you I was really hesitating to give him the jar till the last minute - call me silly, but I'm rather shy and was afraid he might find me simply ridiculous! But Patricia, the friend who gave me the recipe, reassured me - we might be both a little clumsy, but so what? He would certainly be pleased anyway!

My mailman brought me an Amazon order this morning and I finally gave him his jar... He was very surprised and didn't know what to say! I just hope he was happy. Now I'm thinking, maybe I was ridiculous... but at least now he knows how much I appreciate him!

I think it was a fabulous idea!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you too :-) It is snowing heavily here, so we cancelled and stayed home - our neighbor invited us for dinner though, yummy!

I used to make Christmas cookies for our garbage man when I lived in Maine. LOL. I bet you made the parcel-mail-man's day (week, month!) with your kindness. What a sweet gesture!

Can you share that recipe?

Dear Isabelle,
That was really a kind and lovely gesture. He will remember your kindness always I am sure and must feel a glow within him that he is appreciated for his work. I bet you made his day.

I hope he did like it. More fool him if he didn't!

Thanks so much for the comment about salted butter from Brittany. It's not horribly expensive but still not cheap. I do use salted butter in baking & cooking but it's a slightly cheaper English one. I know just how much things like chocolate brownies are improved by a tiny amount of salt, so I'd love to try the moelleux au chocolat...

What a nice thing for you to do for your mailman. I think we sometimes take their efforts for granted. I'm sure he appreciated it. Have a nice weekend!

I'm sure he was speechless because of your kindness. I would imagine that it's not easy being a mailman just about anywhere, and where would we be without them? That was a very thoughtful thing you did and I am sure he won't readily forget.

Thank you also for reminding us of all the people we depend on each day, it should challenge us all to show our appreciation. I hope we all can be as creative as you were.

Tell him that your friend in America is very blessed by his carrying all those Katrina bags up to you, to send to me, to send to TX, with love. It's wonderful and not surprising that your thoughtfulness extended to the least expecting person. Bless you!

What a wonderful gift for your mailman!!!! I'm doing something similiar for my Mail-Lady at Christmas. I have made a little jar cover that reads" For Emergencies Only" and inside is chocolate Kisses!! I had actually seen this done by another stitcher and I loved the idea of it!!!
I'm sure your mailman was amazed that you even thought to Thank him. I'm sure most people never even aknowledge his hard work!!!

That is so cute. I always give my mailman ('letter' mailman) a gift on Christmas Eve. I leave a little pack of cookies or candies wrapped up out in the mailbox for them. I never know if they likes it. I never thought to gift the UPS (parcel) guy, but he is always in a hurry and most of the time packages get left on the porch whem I'm not there. :) I love the jar top, and I think the gift is very appropriate. You aren't crazy at all.

Don't be silly, I'm sure he was just too stunned by your kindness! It isn't often that people go out of their way to be kind to one another. I think it was very appropriate to tell him how much you appreciate all his hard work. Wouldn't it be a nicer place if we all did that? :D

The topper is so cute and the jam sounds very tasty. :) Who knows, he may be come back and ask for a refill. ;)

Oh Isabelle! I bet you absolutely made that man's day! I would leave something for my mailman, but I don't think much of him folding up my "do not bend" marked packages (containing charts, usually) and jamming them into my mailbox... Now, the FedEx parcel guy who often leaves a little bone for the dog, HE might be worth something. ;)

You are such a loving, giving person. I'm sure he appreciates the thought, at the very least!
