My friend Murielle's Birthday

Murielle is a very, very dear friend who lives in Belgium. Some of you may remember that she came to visit me in Paris last month. Thursday was her birthday!
This is why I'd spent all my spare time making gifts for her since I was back in Paris.

The post office was exceptionnally closed when I sent her the parcel, and the next Monday was a Holiday in France. All this delayed the delivery... but Murielle finally received the parcel on Friday, just one day late. Pheww!

Here are the gifts I made her:

1° An embroidered card... Which I forgot to photograph before sending it to her. Silly me!

2° A miniature kimono, made like a real one. Murielle is fond of Chinese and Japanese culture.

It is tiny (20 cm), but since all the details of a real-size one are there, it was a lot of work and precision. Next time I'll make her a real-size one! It won't be much more work... Although I'm sure my friend Shashi will like the miniature version better...

3° A small fragrance bag:

Maybe some of you will have recognized the design... I was inspired by Denise's gift to me last week. Those sachets are supposed to hold a small soap but my grandma had given me some precious lavender from her garden when I was in the Straights of Dover 2 weeks ago. I love putting lavender sachets into drawers and wardrobes to give the clothes a fresh scent.
I put the lavender into a small tissue pouch so the grains wouldn't go off from the small gaps between the ribbon and the loops. Yes, even tissue paper can be sewn! I thought tissue was the best option to enable the fragrance to exhale at its fullest.

Murielle told me on receiving the parcel that she loved perfuming her wardrobes with fragrance sachets as well... And here is another common point between us!

Isabelle the miniature kimono is lovely. You are so right I do like the miniature one it could fit a doll perfectly. If you have a pattern I could perhaps buy it from you. I want to make a Japanese doll sometime. It is on my list of things to do.

You have been busy! Such pretty things, your friend is very lucky. :) The kimono is adorable and I can only imagine how difficult it was to make. I've made doll clothes before and they can be very difficult being so tiny. :) I also love the bottle aprons you made. When I saw the pictures it immediately reminded me of my grandmother's kitchen, she loved those kind of things. Keep up the great work!

What wonderful gifts you made for your friend. The kimono is so lovely. This summer friends and I went to a quilt show here locally and they had a section for miniature quilts and the theme may have been kimonos'. There was at least 3 that I remember. Just fascinating too. It seems to me to enter that quilt catagory everyone recieves the same packet of fabric and each used it as she wished for her entry. I love to see the work of indivuals and just how different one entry is from another and each so special. I too am a fan of old-fashioned lavender. I have two bunchs tied with ribbon on each side of my bathroom window. Back to kimono's for a second..a friend is missionary soon in Japan, and she is making Japanese dolls out of a special paper, clothes and all. She took a class to do this and loves it. (The class was in Japan, of course). Oh the wonderful things to be learned all over the world.

Beautiful work, Isabelle! You are a very talented seamstress. I am so drawn to that miniature kimono. :) I love lavender too, so the sachet's a big hit.

Murielle must have been very happy to receive such wonderful gifts from such a good friend!

Isabelle

you're really very generous to your friend. Those are lovely gifts, I'm sure she is very very happy receiving them. I especially love the kimono. How I wish I could sew one for myself ! It's a very cute wallhanging :)

What wonderful gifts, Isabelle! I love the kimono. I will have to find a pattern for something like that - my mind is racing - I think I even have fabric for something like that! Thank you for the inspiration!

Isabelle, you are so clever. Where do you find the time? I'm really hoping to start sewing Eve's doll soon, but I haven't even bought the fabric yet. Her first birthday is the end of September, so I'd better get cracking! These gifts are really lovely, thanks for sharing.

My plea joins all those above - are you willing to share the pattern for your mini-Kimono? My elderly Japanese friend would be over the moon if I presented her with one of those!
